Business students impress in “Lambeth Dragons’ Den”

Two groups of young entrepreneurs from SBU Sixth’s Business & Finance class took part in the ‘Lambeth Dragons’ Den’ event today (Tues 13 May), with both groups winning recognition for their social enterprise plans and achievements.

The Lambeth Town Hall event included nine teams of students from the borough’s schools, each team presenting their business plan to the of ‘Dragons’ – four business owners and senior execs from area.

SBU Sixth Team One presented their plan for Charity Fun Runs. They’d originally planned to hold the first of these in March, but after a problem with the location, has changed their fundraiser to a ‘Mystery Cinema’. This earned praise from the Dragons who commented that overcoming setbacks is an essential characteristic for successful businesses.

Team Two’s proposal covered an ambitious schedule of recruitment fairs and careers resources tailored at the area’s young people. The plan had grown from a successful recruitment event that they had organised at SBU6 last term, attended by over 200 students. The Dragons were impressed with that achievement, and the determination they had shown to make their idea become reality.

The students’ efforts earned two awards – “Most Entrepreneurial” for the Team One, while Team Two scooped “Most Impactful”.

SBU Sixth’s Lead Tutor for Business & Finance, Clarise Mofor, commented: “Seeing students develop ideas and present as well as this makes me happy to be their teacher. Their hard work is creating opportunities for social mobility and economic development – this is the kind of impact we want from learning!”

The Lambeth Dragon’s Den was organised by the Social Enterprise Academy, which runs a wide range of activities developing best practice in leadership and social entrepreneurship. SEA’s Heather Labanya has been running workshops at schools across the borough, including SBU6, and thanks all the participating schools and sixth forms for their “exceptional engagement and passionate ideas”.
