We’re thrilled to give you an inside look at our recent, groundbreaking Skanska Takeover Day that took place at South Bank University Sixth Form (SBUSixth) on the 14th of December 2023. This event wasn’t just a day in the calendar; it was a beacon of opportunity, inspiration, and real-world learning for our students.
Skanska’s Legacy and Impact
Skanska, a leading force in project development and construction, has significantly shaped the UK’s landscape with their innovative and impactful projects. Their involvement in the HS2 Main Works in London, is a testament to their capability in handling groundbreaking infrastructure projects. This project, part of the UK’s ambitious high-speed railway, is a prime example of Skanska’s commitment to transformative construction and development.
A Day of Comprehensive Learning and Engagement
Our students had the unique opportunity to dive deep into the realms of engineering, HR, business operations, health & safety, and environmental management through interactive sessions with Skanska’s experts. These workshops were designed to provide a realistic glimpse into various career paths and to spark curiosity about the vast possibilities in the construction and development sector.
Career Development with a Personal Touch
The CV Clinic was a highlight, offering bespoke guidance to make our students’ CVs stand out. The apprenticeship talk opened new horizons, particularly highlighting Skanska’s apprenticeship opportunities, which blend academic learning with practical experience.
Degree Apprenticeships: A Win-Win Pathway
Degree apprenticeships represent a fusion of education and hands-on experience. Students earn a degree while working with industry leaders like Skanska, gaining real-world skills that set them apart in the job market. This innovative approach aligns perfectly with our ethos at SBUSixth – preparing students not just academically, but also for the practical challenges of the professional world.
From left to right, here are a few of our esteemed alumni, Taiwo, Kazim, and Iga, who have all successfully secured prestigious degree apprenticeships with our employer partner Skanska.
Deepening Community Engagement Through Student Initiative
Our Cancer Research UK fundraiser, spearheaded by the brilliant Clarissa and supported by our Students’ Union, was a heartwarming example of community spirit. Clarissa’s idea to sell Krispy Kreme doughnuts captured everyone’s imagination, turning a simple fundraiser into a vibrant, school-wide event. This effort not only raised significant funds for a noble cause but also highlighted the power of student-led initiatives in fostering empathy, teamwork, and a strong sense of community responsibility within SBUSixth.
