BTEC Level 3 Science

BTEC Science allows you to develop your scientific knowledge and skills through a highly practical course. The focus is on relating learning to the workplace but the course also carries UCAS points, enabling progression to university or a higher apprenticeship. It is equivalent to 3 GCE ‘A’ levels and is highly valued by universities and employers for a range of degree courses or employment opportunities.

You will learn through a variety of activities such as lab experiments, practical work, tutorials, carrying out research; going on industrial visits and making presentations.

Core units include Scientific Principles, Practical Scientific Procedures, Investigation Skills, Laboratory Techniques and an Investigative Project. Specialist pathways include Forensic Science or Biomedical Science.

The BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science is for students who wish to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education or apprenticeships and ultimately employment in the applied science sector.

A qualification in Applied Science can lead to many degree level science courses include: Pharmacy, Radiography, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Psychology, Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, Medical professions, Food Science, Energy sector, Satellite Communications and Materials Science.

Students will study across all three sciences disciplines: Biology, Chemistry and Physics covering topics including: fundamental chemical and physical principals, structure and function of cells, physiology and disease, electromagnetic waves and satellite communication amongst many other fascinating areas in contemporary science.

Assessment:

  • Internally-assessed units over the 2 years of the course, including assignments and practicals.
  • 4 external exams
