SBU Sixth Geneva visit

60 SBU Sixth students took an educational trip to Geneva, Switzerland, this March. The visit was planned to mix educational and cultural experiences, taking in museums, the United Nations headquarters and museums, as well as allowing some time for exploring.

A highlight for all was a visit to world-famous science research centre, CERN. Students got to see how the centre is expanding knowledge of quantum physics and the impact this has on society and the economy. For engineering and science students in particular, this was a great opportunity to see models and simulations showing how the ‘Large Hadron Collider’ was built, and what it has achieved.

The whole group also visited the United Nations HQ, with a chance to learn about its role in the development and application of human rights, as well as getting photos at its impressive flag-lined vista.

Those studying Health and Science particularly enjoyed trips to the Museum of the History of Science, and the International Red Cross Museum. At the Red Cross, students were given a presentation on humanitarian history, including the development of the ‘Geneva Convention’ protocols.

In between these educational experiences, students got some time to explore Geneva, visiting restaurants and some of Geneva’s arts sites, such as the giant ‘Broken Chair’ sculpture, and leisure attractions.

The three-day tour was SBU Sixth’s first overseas trip and planning has already begun for more educational visits into Europe in 2026.
