Black Girl’s Space (BGS), a student-led organisation at the University of Cambridge, is dedicated to creating a safe, empowering space for Black women. They focus on enhancing social life at university while driving meaningful change through campaigning and activism.
Last week, BGS visited SBU Sixth as part of their Access Tour, designed to promote access to opportunities and raise aspirations among Black female students in schools and sixth forms. The visit was proudly supported by the Kinship Bursary, which sponsors BGS and provides coaching programmes to empower young Black women to excel in education and beyond. At SBU Sixth, Cambridge undergraduates Lily, Kareece, and Joelle inspired an audience of 50 female students with their stories and insights. They shared invaluable tips including: standing out in applications and interviews; the Cambridge college system; mentoring schemes for students; and daily life in Cambridge.
The key message the speakers shared was: “Students from all backgrounds should see themselves at the university of their dreams by thinking, ‘Why not me?’. If you’re considering Cambridge, go for it – with hard work and resilience, anything is possible!”
Caron Bernard, Head of Student Services at SBU Sixth, reflected:
“Hearing from these young women, all thriving at Cambridge in different subjects, shows our students that a place at a top university is within their reach. Their success was truly inspiring, and I look forward to seeing some of our students joining the BGS network and returning to inspire others in the future.”
Huge thanks to BGS and the Kinship Bursary for making this event possible and for empowering the next generation of Black female scholars!
