Skills on both sides of the interview table were put to the test by SBU6 Business students this week. The students were engaged in the ‘Recruitment and Selection’ module and developed an innovative exercise to put their learning into practice. Each member of the group wrote a job description for a Finance or Business role, based on the requirements of real-life vacancies. They then reviewed CVs and applications from other members of the group and carried out mock interviews, scoring their peers in categories such as presentation skills, relevant competencies and body language.
The process was based on learning they had experienced throughout the module, including a guest lecture from Alexandra Hoffmeister, People Business Partner at London South Bank University. The students had to think about how they would pitch their vacancy to attract the best available candidates, as well as how best to present themselves and their skills when on the ‘candidate’ side of the table.
Business tutor Martina Ayokunle explained, “It was great to see the students embrace this task with such enthusiasm. As well as learning about the how the recruitment sector operates, they’ve had a chance to put themselves under the pressure of performing well at interview. This experience will be a big help to them when being interviewed for highly competitive placement opportunities or apprenticeship vacancies next year.”
