Guest talks on investment and taxation

Leading up to the budget later this month, investments and tax are hot topics of conversation. SBUSixth Business & Finance students have had the opportunity to hear from experts in both this week, at guest sessions run by city firm M&G and government revenue arm HMRC.

The M&G visit was the latest stage in their Investment Challenge programme. Student groups took part in a range of activities designed to increase awareness about opportunity and risk, as well as develop excitement and skills for future careers in finance. HMRC guests spoke to the students about myths and truths of taxation, how tax is collected and the services it funds.

Curriculum Lead Clarise Mofor said, “It is wonderful for the students to find out more about two sides of the finance sector from these industry insiders.

M&G’s Investment Challenge is a fantastic addition to our programme this year. The students take on the role of fund managers, and get to make real-world investment decisions, through teamwork and critical thinking, building on their financial literacy.

The HMRC visit was arranged by tutor Patricia Zaidi who added: “Taxation is a key part of economic policy, and we have learned about not just how it is collected but the benefits and risks of different forms of taxation and government spending. This helps the students deepen their understanding of the choices and political conversations around the budget.”
