A-Level Physics explores how the universe works, from the tiniest particles to the largest forces in space, building on what students learn at GCSE but going into much greater depth. Taken as part of an A-Level programme, Physics develops strong problem-solving and mathematical skills, as well as practical laboratory techniques through experiments and investigations. It’s a challenging but rewarding course that suits students who enjoy maths and understanding how things work, and it opens doors to a wide range of careers, including in engineering, physics, construction and technology industries.

Students will study a mix of fundamental and advanced topics that explain how the physical world works. The course typically begins with forces, motion and energy, helping students understand how objects move and interact, before moving on to electricity and circuits, where they explore current, resistance and power. They also learn about waves, including sound and light, and how these are used in technology industries.
As the course progresses, students study more complex ideas like fields (including gravity and electromagnetism), the structure of matter and nuclear physics.
Alongside the theory, there is a strong focus on practical work, with students carrying out experiments to develop their investigative skills and understand how scientific ideas are tested.

A-Level Physics opens up a wide range of degree-level options, particularly in science and technology subjects. Many go on to study degree coursess such as Physics, Engineering (mechanical, electrical, aerospace), or Astrophysics, while others use it as part of their A-Level programme for entry to degrees in health science areas due to the analytical and mathematical skills it develops. It is also highly valued for courses like Computer Science, Mathematics and Data Science, where logical thinking is essential.
Because it shows strong numerical ability and critical thinking, Physics is respected by universities and employers across many disciplines, meaning students can also progress into areas such as Architecture or Business.
