A-Level Biology explores how living things function, from tiny molecules inside cells to whole ecosystems. You’ll learn about topics such as cell structure, genetics, human biology, evolution and how organisms interact with their environment. The course develops your practical laboratory skills and scientific thinking. Combining theory and experiments, students develop their understanding of disease, biodiversity and biotechnology, preparing them for further study and careers in areas such as medicine, healthcare, environmental science and research.

  • Course details

The course builds on what you have learned at GCSE and you’ll study a wide range of topics that build up your understanding of how life works. You begin with core ideas such as cell structure, biological molecules (like proteins, enzymes and DNA) and how cells divide and specialise.

You will cover systems within the body, including the heart, lungs, digestion and the nervous and immune systems. You’ll also explore genetics and inheritance, learning how traits are passed on and how modern technologies like gene editing work. Later topics often include ecosystems, biodiversity and evolution, helping you understand how organisms interact and adapt over time. Throughout the course, there is a strong focus on practical work, where you carry out experiments, analyse results and develop the investigative skills for further study and work in science.

  • What this course can lead to

Studying A-Level Biology as part of your A Level programme opens the door to a wide range of degree-level courses and future career options, particularly in science and healthcare. Many students go on to study subjects such as Biology, Biomedical Science, Genetics, Zoology, Marine Biology or Environmental Science at university. It is also a key requirement or strong supporting subject for competitive courses like Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science and Pharmacy.

Biology is also an important element of degrees in Psychology, Sport Science, Forensics and other science-related fields.
